Last month, Unsafe Foods reported on dog treat recalls, but recently there have been more voluntary recalls by manufacturers of these treats. Previously, we stated that the FDA had issued caution when purchasing dog treats: specifically “chewy dog treats” that are made by smoking and drying the bones. These types of bones can splinter when chewed, causing  choking, digestive tract obstruction, and cuts to the mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding from the rectum or even death.

United Pet Group, a division of Spectrum Brands, has voluntarily recalled eight more brands of dog treats (rawhide chews) due to chemical contamination. According to Spectrum Brands,

“United Pet Group realized that specific rawhide chew manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Colombia, as well as one of its suppliers in Brazil, were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture as a processing aid in the manufacturing of rawhide chews. The compound is an anti-microbial chemical that is approved for cleaning food processing equipment. But it has not been approved in the U.S. as a processing aid in the production of rawhide chews for dogs.”

Consumers reported an “unpleasant odor” to Spectrum Foods. Additionally, some pets exhibited signs of illness such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Look for These Types of Treats Instead

Reviews.com has conducted a comprehensive survey of the best kinds of dog treats out there. According to the website, “The best dog treats should pack plenty of protein. They should also be free of unnecessary additives like artificial flavors or extra salt and sugar. To find the best, we consulted vets and dog trainers, scrutinized ingredient labels, and tried out our favorites on our own pets. Because dogs have individual tastes, just like humans, our top picks offer a variety of textures and flavors to appeal to even the pickiest pooch.”

Researchers began with over 300 dog treats that included major brands available in pet stores or online, from PetCo, Chewy.com, and Amazon. They excluded rawhide chews and bones which the FDA now advises against “due to a link with pet deaths.” Their research recommended the following best treats for dogs:

  • Stella & Chew’s Carnivore Crunch Beef Recipe (Best Overall)
  • Zuke’s Mini Naturals Fresh Peanut Butter Formula Dog Treats (Best Moist)
  • ZewiPeak Venison Good Dog Treats (Best Jerky)
  • Canidae Grain-Free Pure Heaven with Salmon and Sweet Potato (Best Baked)

Alternatives to Rawhide Treats

Fortunately, you can minimize the risk associated with giving your dog rawhide treats. As mentioned above, you can provide your pet with other tasty treats. Dogs love to chew, but you can give him raw carrots (washed, of course), and raw bones (those that are not purchased from stores as they are filled with chemical additives). You can even try a product called Monster Himalayan Chews that are filled with natural yak’s milk. Another alternative calls for filling a rubber Kong ball with half of a mashed banana and some yogurt, then freezing. Our friends at SimpleWag.com have also composed a list of all of the treat and foods dogs can eat.

The dogs love chewing to get at the tasty, and healthy, ingredients inside.  As with any treat that requires chewing, monitor your dog and throw the treat away when it becomes soft and mushy.
