Each week UnsafeFoods gathers information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other sources to help you identify recalled items that might be in your pantry.  This week the undeclared milk allergen in chocolate products continues and a health alert has been issued by USDA for a Listeria risk.

Undeclared Allergens

Consumers with allergies rely on manufacturers to accurately list ingredients on packaging.  The United States requires known allergens to be clearly declared to help those with allergies or severe sensitivities to make informed decisions.  When packages are not appropriately marked, serious illness may occur.  This week, undeclared milk allergens in chocolate products continues to make the recall list.

Germack Roasting Co: Dark Chocolate Almond Bark

Germack Roasting Co issued a recall on November 7, 2017 for the 5 ounce and 1 pound packages of Germack Dark Chocolate Almond Bark due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergry or severe sensitivity may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.  The recall was issued due to a larger recall involving their supplier GKI Foods LLC.

These products was distributed to the retail at Eastern Market located in Detroit, Michigan and through mail orders.

The product can be identified as packaged in clear plastic packages in 5 ounce and 1 pound sizes sold between 9/20/16 and 10/30/17 with UPC codes 088401520105 and 11681398.

No illness has been reported at this time as a result of the recall.  Questions may be directed to 313-784-9484 between Monday and Friday 8:00AM to 3:00PM EST.

Kroger: Chocolate Products

Kroger issued a recall on November 1, 2017 on select bulk dark chocolate products in Michigan stores as a result of a larger recall involving the supplier GKI Foods LLC to the distributor Lipari Foods due to an undeclared milk allergen.  People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.

The product was sold in the self-service bulk food bins and has since been removed from sale.  The customer recall notification system alerting customers who may have purchased the recalled products has been initiated.

No illness has been reported to date.  Customers who are allergic to milk that have purchased any of the recalled products are asked to return it to a store for a full refund or replacement.  Questions may be directed to Kroger at 1-800-KROGERS on Monday through Friday between 8:00AM and 9:00PM EST.

Setton International Foods: Select Dark Chocolate Products

Setton International Foods, Inc. of Commack, New York issued a voluntary recall on November 1, 2017 for select dark chocolate covered almonds and dark chocolate covered raisins as a result of a recall from the supplier GKI Foods, LLC.  Individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may experience serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.

Affected products include all best before dates with the following products sold at Price Chopper Stores and Market Basket Stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont sold after February 22, 2016.

The recall was initiated after notification from the supplier, GKI Foods, of a recall related to undeclared milk allergen present in the dark chocolate almonds and dark chocolate raisin products.

Consumers with a milk allergy should discontinue use immediately.No illness has been reported at this time.  Consumer should contact their physician with any health questions or concerns.  Consumers may contact Setton International Foods, Inc with any questions at 1-800-227-4397, Monday through Friday, 9:00AM to 3:00PM.

Dutch Valley Food Distributors, Inc.: Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds and Cashews

Dutch Valley Food Distributors, Inc. of Myerstown, Pennsylvania issued a recall on November 1, 2017 for 11 ounce Dark Chocolate Almonds and 11 ounce Dark Chocolate Cashews due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may experience serious or life-threating reaction if product is consumed.

The affected products were distributed to the following states: AR, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, ME, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI, WV, and online at www.dutchvalleyfoods.com.

The product can be identified as being packaged in a clear cellophane heat sealed package weighing 11 ounces, with a statement: “Distributed by Dutch Valley Food Distributors Inc. Myerstown, PA 17067.”  Affected lot codes are as follows:

GKI Foods, LLC of Brighton, Michigan issued an updated recall on November 1, 2017 for Dark Chocolate Products due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may risk serious or life-threatening reaction.  This recall is an update from the October 27, 2017 recall already reported.

The product can be identified as being in plastic hanging and stand-up bags, plastic tubs, and cardboard boxes.  The recall was initiated after discovering that dark chocolate products were distributed in packaging that did not indicate the presence of milk allergen.

No illness has been reported so far as a result of this outbreak.

Health Alert

A health alert is issued when a food product is contaminated with something that can cause human illness.  This week poultry products are a concern for Listeria contamination.

Mary’s Harvest Fresh Foods, Inc.: Kale & Broccoli Slaw Salad with Grilled Chicken Breast

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert on October 25, 2017 for Mary’s Harvest Fresh Foods Kale & Broccoli Slaw Salad with Grilled Chicken Breast (Rib Meat) due to the potential health hazard Listeria monocytogenes.  This message comes as an alert instead of a recall because it is believed that all products are no longer available for purchase and past the indicated “best by” dates. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause mild diarrheal illness in normally individuals, serious illness in the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system, and women who are pregnant risk miscarriage or still birth.

The item is indicated as being 8.75 ounce containers with Kale & Broccoli Slaw Salad with Grilled Chicken Breast (Rib Meat) with item number #20346, establishment number P-39928, Use By dates of 10/12/17 through 10/16/17 and shipped to retail locations in Oregon and Washington.

 The issue was discovered on October 19, 2017 when they were notified at the broccoli supplier was involved in an and FDA recall due to the potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Trader Joe’s: Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with White Chicken Meat

A health alert was issued on October 31, 2017 by Ghiringhelli Specialty Foods of Vallejo, California for Trader Joe’s brand Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with White Chicken Meat due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

This message comes as an alert instead of a recall because it is believed that all products are no longer available for purchase and past the indicated “best by” dates. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause mild diarrheal illness in normally individuals, serious illness in the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system, and women who are pregnant risk miscarriage or still birth.

The item is indicated as being 9.3 ounce containers with Kale & Broccoli Slaw Salad with White Chicken Breast Meat with establishment number P-17156, Use By dates of 10/10/17, 10/12/17, and 10/13/17, with lot codes of 70327610, 70427710, 70527810, and 70627910and shipped to retail locations in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah.

The issue was discovered on October 20, 2017 when notification of a recall for the broccoli products supplier was received.
