Each week UnsafeFoods brings recent recalls to you in one convenient place.  Information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the United States Department of Agriculture, and other sources are combined in our Weekly Recall Round Up.  This week we have found recalls in instant coffee, a juice drink, and dried chili pepper due to undeclared allergens and a recall of prepared sandwiches and other products from a manufacturer has been issued due to a health alert due to potential presence of a harmful foodborne bacteria.

Undeclared Allergen

Those with serious allergic reactions or sensitivities rely on manufacturers to appropriately label packages containing potential allergens.  If someone who has an allergy or severe sensitivity consumes a product with the allergen in it, a serious or life-threatening reaction may occur.  Undeclared allergen recalls are a result of packaging that does not indicate the potential allergen present in the food product.

Hong Lee Trading Inc.: Vina Café Wake-Up Instant Coffee

 

 

On September 28, 2017, Hong Lee Trading Inc issued an allergen alert for the Vina Café Wake-Up Instant Coffee due to an undeclared allergen, milk.  This recall includes the 18 pack cardboard boxes (0.6 oz packs) of lot “EXP:17.MAR.2019 1T13” and is indicated on the bottom of the box.  The product did not include the allergen declaration warning on the label or indicated milk ingredient on the label.  Consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk could risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors testing indicated the presence of undeclared milk allergens.

The product as distributed throughout Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Consumers who have purchased the product are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.  Questions may be directed to Hong Lee Trading Inc. at 713-786-2100.

Dean Dairy: Tampico Brand Tropical Punch

 

On October 2, 2017 Dean Dairy issued a voluntary recall of the gallon-size Tropic Punch flavor of Tampico® brand punch due to undeclared milk allergen.  This product was bottled and distributed by Dean Dairy and sold in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin and includes products with the “Best By” date of 12-27-17.  Due to a manufacturing error the product may contain the allergen milk, and does not indicate the ingredient or declaration on the packaging.

Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.  No illness has been reported at this time.

No other products or Tampico flavors are impacted, and this recall does not apply to Tampico Tropical Punch product that was bottled or distributed to any bottlers other than Dean Dairy.

Dean Dairy is urging customers to discard the product and return product packaging to the place of purchase for full refund or exchange.  Questions can be directed to 1-800-587-2259 between the hours of 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, EST, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays).

 Sid Wainer & Son®: Jansal Valley® Dried Chili De Arbol Peppers

On October 3, 2017 Sid Wainer & Son ® of New Bedford, MA issued a voluntary recall for the Jansal Valley® brand Dried Chili De Arbol Peppers due to undeclared allergen, peanuts.  During repacking of the product, peanut contamination was discovered in the bulk containers of the product.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.

The product is packaged in a clear, plastic clamshell design container and labeled Jansal Valley® Dried Chili De Arbol Peppers.  The product is packaged in 1 ounce sizes and cases contain 12 of the 1 ounce units.  The product best by dates affected include 9/11/2018, 9/22/2018, and 9/26/2018.

The product is distributed to retail stores and grocery stores nationwide.  At this time no illness has been reported related to this undeclared allergen.

Health Alert

A health alert is issued with a product is potentially contaminated with a pathogen or other contaminant that could pose a serious health risk.

Greencore USA, LLC: Egg Salad Sandwiches, Ham Salad Sandwiches, and Seafood Stuffing Recall

On September 29, 2017 Greencore USA, LLC issued a recall for their egg salad sandwiches, ham salad sandwiches, and seafood stuffing due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.  Routine environmental sampling conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed Listeria monocytogenesListeria has not been found in finished products and no illnesses have been reported related to the potential issue.

Listeria monocytogenes is bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in the very young, the very old, and those with compromised immune systems.  Health adults often only experience short-term symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, stiffness, severe headache, and high fever.  Pregnant women may show mild symptoms, but infection could lead to miscarriage and stillbirth.

As a preventative measure because Listeria monocytogenes was found in the manufacturing environment, lots that were distributed between September 24 and 27, 2017 are being recalled.  Sandwiches affected by the recall were distributed to American Food and Vending, Hannaford Brothers, Target, and Turkey Hill in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  The “Use By Date” is located on the back panel of the sandwich packaging.  The Hannaford Brothers Seafood Stuffing with lot codes between 10/2/2017 and 10/19/2017 are also being recalled.
